Theo’s Theology
I recently read Theo of Golden, a novel by Allen Levi, a lawyer, judge, and a singer-songwriter as well as an author. He ends his book with “A Thousand Thanks” to his readers. Following his example, I am grateful for the Theo in Allen. Theo of Golden is about creative generosity.
Theo is a mysterious, 86-year-old man from Portugal who spends a year in Golden, Georgia. He finds a local coffee shop that has three walls lined with pencil portraits of patrons, all of which are for sale. He studies each portrait, always looking for sadness in the person’s eyes. He is inspired to purchase one portrait at a time, find out who the person is, and gift the portrait to it’s “rightful owner.”
As Theo meets his new friends and gifts them their portraits, he listens to their sad stories. He looks deeply in their eyes and sees their unique goodness and beauty. He mirrors to them what he believes are their God-given gifts. He starts connecting the portraited patrons. You will have to read the book to find out what happens! There is a surprise ending.
I am currently reading Born to Flourish: How New Science and Ancient Wisdom Reveal a Simple Path to Thriving by Richard J. Davidson, PhD and Cortland Dahl, PhD. Richie’s work as the Founder and Director of the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is very familiar to me. Inspired by the Dali Lama, he believes in the innate goodness of all people.
Richie and Cort’s work focuses on four transformative practices: awareness, connection, insight, and purpose. I imagine they would agree with Pablo Picasso’s belief that, "The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away." They would probably smile at the Wake Robin Residents Association’s exploration of “Purposeful Generosity” with a small, fund balance surplus. Theo models this beautifully, as he tangibly and intangibly gives to complete strangers. He earns the trust, respect, and love of many inhabitants of Golden.
In these troubled times, our neighbors are in need. It’s a great time to give what you can. Lend an ear. Donate time, talent, or treasure to your favorite charity. Give someone a hug. Tell them about the Divine you see in their eyes. Practice Theo’s theology. Show up with the gift of Divine Mischief.
